Lessons are held at the Rathmore Club on Cherry Hinton Rd in Cambridge each Wednesday in term time.
The lessons run throughout the evening and people are taught in the traditional aural way by listening and repetition. You don’t need to be able to read music.
They are done in a friendly informal setting and children/adults are taught in small groups in various corners of the club. All tutors and volunteers maintain the Comhaltas Child Protection Policy.
Our present list of regular music lessons include:
- Beginners Fiddle
- Intermediate Fiddle
- Beginners Button Accordion
- Intermediate Button Accordion
- Uilleann Pipes
- Beginners Tin Whistle
- Intermediate Tin Whistle
- Beginners Bodhran
- Intermediate Bodhran
- Beginners Session Tunes
- Intermediate Session tunes
There are no lessons during school holidays (including half-term); see the Cambridge City Council website for future dates, or our Events Calendar page to confirm when lessons restart. The last Wednesday of each term has a tutor-led session in which everyone can participate and practice the tunes being learnt.
As well as the lessons, there’s generally a children’s session that starts around 7pm each Wednesday.
We also have group of adults who play together regularly each Wednesday after the
official lesson time has ended (9pm-ish) and they find that they benefit from this informal setting as it gives them a chance to play the new tunes they have recently learnt at a more pedestrian pace than in more advanced sessions.
